Description

OPT Industries was established in February 2019 with an interdisciplinary team and recently announced its Series A funding. We develop and manufacture architected textile materials that contain detailed microstructures for function and tactile richness. Textiles are widely used in fashion, furniture, home appliances, medical, filtration, defense, to name a few. It is a multi-billion dollar industry that relies on a century-old manufacturing pipeline: fiber acquiring, spinning, knitting/weaving, surface treatment and assembling fabric to produce parts. The production speed has been increasing, at the cost of high carbon footprint, low flexibility of customization and precision, and intensive human labor. Our technologies vertically integrate all processes into one additive manufacturing system, where things can be precisely designed and made from a single liquid polymer precursor to heterogeneous solid architecture, With precision in the micrometer range and the scale in meters. It fundamentally changes the way we make materials and products, with fewer (hence stable) supply chain steps and bigger design space for designers.
