FM Global looking to develop custom briefing on Robotics to manage risks in industrial settings

Deadline: November 12, 2020

FM Global is an insurance company that exclusively insures large commercial properties, such as large industrial and manufacturing properties, commercial buildings, hospitals, college campuses, government complexes, power plants etc. We are a multinational company based in Johnston, RI with 5,000+ global employees in offices across the globe.

FM Global had a unique, non-traditional engineering based business model that arise from our belief that majority of property losses are preventable. While most insurance assess and price the risk based on historical losses (actuarial model), we use engineering and risk assessment at the individual location level to underwrite the risk and determine terms (premiums, limits etc.) FM Global has a large engineering force that regularly inspect our client’s locations. We collect thousands of data points for each location and we use this data to evaluate risks and recommend improvements to reduce risk to our client's property.

We would like to develop a custom briefing on Robotics to explore how might we or our clients use robotics to manage and mitigate risks in Industrial settings. Robotics use cases fall under the following broad areas of application:

  1. Conducting inspection of buildings and equipment through robotics for efficiency and safety of property and people. Currently our inspection model is “boots on the ground” model. We are exploring the use of aerial imagery, computer vision, 360 degree scanning, point cloud digital solutions and robotics all of which are in various stages of development/adoption.
  2. Reduce the risk to property and people by replacing error prone manual human-related activities by robots in the operation of assets in industrial/commercial settings.
  3. Understand additional and novel risks to property and people when clients employ robots.

Our preference is to work with later stage startups, but open to talking to early startups based on problem-solution fit and data security review.
