Sustainable Solutions in Packaging with Sealed Air

Deadline: February 29, 2024

Sealed Air Corporation (SEE) designs and delivers packaging solutions that protect essential goods transported worldwide, preserve food, enable e-commerce and digital connectivity, and help create a global supply chain that is touchless, safer, less wasteful, and more resilient.

SEE generated $5.6 billion in revenue in 2022 and has approximately 17,300 employees who serve customers in 120 countries/territories.

Objective: Sealed Air is on a quest to discover groundbreaking solutions and technologies in rigid and flexible packaging. Solutions should be scalable.

Areas of Interest:

  • Foam Manufacturing Methods: Innovations in foaming techniques applicable to industrial manufacturing of foam, including extrusion or batch foaming that could reduce raw material usage, operating cost, or energy consumption.
  • Sustainable Foam Materials: Lightweight cellular solids made from natural, bio-based, biodegradable, compostable, or curbside recyclable materials to replace conventional polymeric closed cell foams (polyolefin, polystyrene, or polyurethane). Final applications may include cushioning, temperature insulation, surface protection, or noise reduction.
  • Paper Barrier Coatings: Coatings that impart barrier properties to paper or pulp substrates (desired barrier properties may include moisture, grease, mineral oil, carbon dioxide, and oxygen). Coatings should maintain curbside recyclability.

Who Should Apply:

  • Startups with proven prototypes or bench-scale research, particularly those in the process of scaling up.
  • Startups seeking assistance in scaling or applying their innovations for real-world customers.

Application Process:

  • Please apply using the opportunity’s form. Please refrain from submitting any confidential information in your application. Deadline for applications: February 29, 2024
  • Selection: All responses will be given feedback, and selected applicants will be contacted to schedule (virtual) follow-up meetings.
  • Potential outcomes for successful applicants could include funded research trials, support from Sealed Air’s subject matter experts, and access to a global network of ISTA-certified testing facilities.
